About The Event
In this guided-listening concert event, acclaimed Polish-American pianist Adam Golka ("brilliant technique and real emotional depth" — The Washington Post) will play a selection of piano pieces by the young Johannes Brahms and Jan Swafford, American composer and biographer. Famous for his spirited and engaging account of the composers, Mr. Swafford has been invited as a guest speaker by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the 92nd Street Y, and many classical music rock stars, including Hilary Hahn, Leif Oves Andsnes, and Olaf Vikingur.
Adam and Jan will chat about Brahms' tumultuous early years with funny anecdotes, “infamous” scandals, and the most famous love triangle in the history of western music. Pianist and Director Sophia Zhou will join forces with Mr. Golka in the beautiful “Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann," as an homage to Brahms’ dearest mentor and friend.
It will be an entertaining, stimulating, and inspiring event. Not to be missed!
The program will include:
Brahms' Scherzo in E-flat Minor, opus 4 Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, opus 23 Swafford's Music Like Steel and Like Fire Brahms' Four Ballades, opus 10
The program is approximately 90 minutes long.
